THE HARRY POTTER STORY
The Harry Potter books are a series of seven fantasy
novels by British writer J.K. Rowling.
The books depict a world of witches and wizards with the
central character being
the yong wizard, Harry Potter. Most of the action takes
place in the Hogwarts School
of Witchcraft and Wizardry and focuses on Harry
Potter’s struggle against the evil
wizard, Lord Voldemort. The books deal with the themes of friendship, ambition,
choice, courage, growing up, love and death.
In 1990, J.K. Rowing was on a crowded train from
Manchester to London when
the idea for Harry simply walked into her head. But
she took almost six years to finish
her first novel –Harry Potter and the
Philosopher’s Stone-which was publish in
the United Kingdom in
July 1997. The books was renamed Harry
Potter and the
Sorcerer’s Stone
for the American market. The last book –Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows- was released on July 2007.
Each book describes one year in Harry’s life at Hogwarts, where he learns to use
magic and
brew potions. The wizarding world in which Harry finds himself is
a collection
of hidden streets, lonely country manors
and castles that remain invisible
to the large non-magical population known as
“Muggles”. It is also a world
of elves and ghosts, dragons and monster, owls
and flying broomsticks, a world
where the Hogwarts Exp
ress departs from
Platform 93/4..
J.K. Rowling’s series of books has won many awards
including the Hugo Award
for the Best Novel. The seven books released have
collectively sold more than
300 million copies and been translated into ninety
three languages. The last book
Deathly Hallows alone broke sales records as the
fastest-selling book ever, selling
more than 11 million copies in the first
twenty-four hours following its release.
